New exhibit now open at Gay Street Gallery, featur New exhibit now open at Gay Street Gallery, featuring work from Fred Williamson.

Frederick Williamson returns to Gay Street Gallery with a new collection of his striking wooden bowls and vessels. Frederick lives and works just west of Charlottesville, Virginia, and has been working with wood since 1971. He turned his focus from custom furniture to turning greenwood bowls around 2020. He has sold through mid-Atlantic craft shows and has been active with the Artisans Studio Tour for 15 years.

As Frederick explains: "Turning bowls straight from the log allows me to bring out the beauty of wood with much artistic spontaneity. I love to work with local trees felled by storm, disease, or old age. Most logs are from within a 30-mile radius of my home. There is a strong element of the found object. People will call me about a tree that came down at their home, perhaps wanting a bowl to preserve memories. I delight in using classic simple shapes to allow the wood to speak for itself. The whole process preserves a bit of the soul of the tree."

Tim Carrington's work on the Fall Art Tour! Carri Tim Carrington's work on the Fall Art Tour!

Carrington’s work is shaped by his parallel involvement in journalism and painting. His paintings, whether landscapes or figure paintings, blend dream-world and real-world elements, emphasizing a sense of story and mood.

A number of recent paintings are part of a “Babel Tower” series. These emphasize cultural collisions, migrations, and wandering exploration. The sense of mayhem and split-off energies in these paintings is offset by the allure of the foreign or the truly new.

Carrington has exhibited his work at single-artist shows at Waverly Place Gallery in Bethesda. Md. and St. Christopher’s School in Richmond, and at group shows in Keene Valley, New York, Millwood, Virginia, and Christ Church Georgetown.

He is a member of the Middle Street Gallery in Washington, and some of his work is exhibited there as well at at the Mullany Art Studio in Flint Hill. He formerly wrote for The Wall Street Journal, and his stories regularly appear in The Rappahannock News.
