I have always loved painting in our farmhouse, the location of which has been continuously lived in since the 1830s. Here inspiration surrounds me. The natural lighting in the two-story loft section of our home accents and washes over the rolling foothills outside our many windows. For this reason, it’s there that I set up my Studio 10 years ago in what we, and all the children and grandchildren who’ve enjoyed working there, call The Art Room. This year, granddaughter and Pratt Art Institute junior Madeline Ponticelli has decided to take a year off, adding her easel to mine in one sunny corner of The Art Room and now we paint together.

While I have experimented with calligraphy, both wood and clay sculpture, oil painting and mural design, I am happiest working at my easel with acrylic paints. I love the depth of rich, vibrant color and tangible, energetic brush strokes and fine detail that can be achieved with this medium. I choose realism in my technique and style, and yet, there is always some quaint, slightly interpretive liberties taken with perspective that allow me to give my art my own, specific … point of view.

In contrast, Madeline paints boldly in bright colors, flat shapes and strong lines using primarily acrylic but also many forms of mixed media and oils. Inspired by the 20s and 30s Art Deco and German Expressionism schools, she brings a 21st century interpretation to abstract art and graphic design. She exhibits talent in both posterization and mural art and loves bringing a sense of humor to her works.
