GAY STREET GALLERY

Reception for artist Jason Goldman

December 17, 2023 from 2:00 – 4:00 pm; refreshments served

Meet artist Jason Goldman, who is currently showing his dimensional paintings (on carved wood) at the Gallery. He will provide an artist’s talk about his work at 3:00 pm during the reception, and will talk with visitors about the process by which he creates his elegant, turned-wood vessels, furniture and objet d’art. That process begins with the need to understand trees, including where to find their wood, such as in ditches, friends’ firewood stashes, through ethically harvested exotics, and other reclaimed materials. He will discuss how he finds inspiration for his designs, and show us how he executes them. And of course, he’ll be happy to take your questions.

GAY STREET GALLERY

Reception for artist Paul Rutz

December 23, 2023 from 2:00 – 4:00 pm, refreshments served

Meet artist Paul Rutz, who is currently showing his dimensional paintings (on carved wood) at the Gallery. He will provide an artist’s talk about his work at 3:00 pm during the reception. Based in Portland, Oregon, but formerly a Virginian, painter Paul Xavier Rutz also carves wood — the wood panels that form the “canvas” for his low-relief wood sculpture-paintings, depicting a variety of subjects and scenes. Paul will talk about his process, including the carving and sanding of the wood to match the scene in his mind’s eye, and then the process of painting in “3D”. Paul is happy to take questions and hear from you about your reactions to his creations.

“Roadside Conversations is a photographic appreciation of the humor, creativity and beauty found everyday along the backroads and streets of the USA. Driving across the country is a feast for the eyes. Just as dogs get led astray by their noses I get led astray by my eyes. I may chug along way under the speed limit, back up suddenly for a better look, or park and jump out into mud puddles or oncoming traffic. In the process I acquired an eclectic group of images. Amazing trees always grab my attention, as do figures of oversized chickens in red pickup trucks and unusual tattoo parlors Most images are light hearted but not all, for example there is a composite of nine roadside memorials, a common form of public mourning.

“Restaurants are an important part of my cross country travels. I make every effort to stop in small noncorporate places. For about fifteen years I took my camera into restaurants and photographed the ambiance, the patrons and the staff. This summer I selected the best images and published them in a book called Dining Out.”

Francie will be in the gallery on December 10 and December 23 with gingerbread.
